Tisha B'Av Film This Year - 'In The Sewers Of Lvov" On the afternoon of Tisha B’Av, Tuesday 20th July, at 6.00pm we will be hosting a presentation by Henry Margulies accompanied by the the film, ‘In The Sewers of Lvov’.
Between May 1943 until liberation in July 1944, a group of Jews, including Henry’s parents, spent fourteen months in hiding in the city's sewer system. The film tells their story. Twenty people, including two children and a pregnant woman, descended into the ledges, caverns, and underground rivers of the catacombs beneath the city streets.
In 1939, Lvov was the third largest Jewish community in pre-war Poland with some 110,000 Jews, of which less than a thousand survived. The film will be followed by Mincha at 8.00 pm and then by Ma'ariv. The fast terminates at 10.00pm.
The following morning, the first service will begin at 6.00am and be over by 8.00am. A second, longer service will begin at 8.30am with a kinnos-based programme and finished by 12.30pm. There will then be an early Mincha at 1.45pm. Would You Like To Recite A Kinnah On Tisha B'Av? Please Let The Warden Know By Return
The
Maariv service on 19th, followed by layaning of Megillas Eichah (The
Book of Lamentations), will be at 9.15pm. The
following morning, the first Shacharis minyan will begin at 6.00am
and finish at about 8.00am. The second minyan will begin
at 8.30am and will finish at around 12.30pm (note that
this is slightly later than previously advertised in the July Luach).
To
enable us to allocate, in advance, the reading of Kinnos by members of
the congregation, please email warden David
Harris by return, letting him know if you will be attending the
early or later Shacharis service.
The Kinnos are some of the most complex parts of our liturgy, and it is hoped that this will give everyone the opportunity to familiarise themselves with their readings in advance, and in this way enhance the quality of the service. Thursday 1st July Howard Fabian Has Lost His Mother We
